Hallo Herr Schuttenhelm,

beim heutigen Durchforsten ihres Sammlershops habe ich mich sehr amüsiert über die " 3 Bäume ". Sie erinnerten mich sofort an die Verfilmung des Romans "Der Herr der Ringe" von Tolkien. Hier wird im "Fangorn - Wald" die Ruhe der "Ents" sehr gut dargestellt und genau diese Ruhe passt zum Sinnbild der drei Affen. Ich finde die Darstellung einfach toll. Vanochtend zag ik hoe Astrid Slegers op een bijzondere wijze vertelde over haar boeiende verzameling.

Als geestelijk verzorger in een verpleeghuis in Delft ben ik benieuwd naar de mogelijkheid om een deel van een horen, zien en zwijgen verzameling in een vitrine ten toon te stellen.

Ik ben benieuwd of een van de HZZ verzamelaars hieraan geinteresseerd is.

Hallo Anneke und Emil.

Aufgrund Eurer neuesten Nachrichten zum Thema „Die drei (weisen) Affen“ habe ich mit einigen Klicks mir noch einmal eine Bilderauswahl angesehen. Dabei kam mir die Einsicht, wie vielfältig doch unser Leben ist. Wer hätte sich vorstellen können, wie viel tausende Varianten alleine zu diesem Thema erdacht und geschaffen werden können. Ihr etwa, als Ihr damit begonnen habt, eine Zusammenstellung zu erstellen, damit Ihr ein wenig Ordnung in Eure Sammlung bekommt? Dazu der Gedanke, die Ursprünge der „3-weisen-Affen“ zu erforschen.

Heute ist daraus eine Studie geworden, die jeder wissenschaftlichen Prüfung standhalten würde. Davon bin ich fest überzeugt. Ihr könnt wirklich sehr stolz auf Eure Arbeit sein. Aber vielleicht erhält gerade diese Beschäftigung Euch jung und aktiv. Wer weiß??

Hello, how are you? I just wanted to let you know that a Norwegian billionaire has opened a top class hotel in Gothenburg called Clarion Post Hotel and in front of the hotel there are three 12 meter statues of 3 men that cannot hear, speak or see. It is wonderful and it glows and changes colors just like in Nice, France.

Maybe something that you would like to see?

I was in Japan many years ago. I thought I saw on the facade of a temple in Kyoto a sculpture of hear no evil, speak no evil, see no evil monkeys such as the one in Nikko. Am I mistaken? If there is a temple like this in Kyoto, please let me know.

Also, I remember I was told that when the builders saw the Temple was so perfectly built they purposely put in one of the bricks upside down as nothing should be that perfect...Bad luck?

Any answers you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Ann, sorry to hear about your misfortune. To answer your question: in Japan, the country where the 3 monkeys originate from, they are considered as a very positive symbol. They are messengers between the God in Heaven and the believers and are trying to keep all evil away from the people. Maybe the 3 monkeys have brought you good luck in the sense that you have not suffered any physical harm in this matter, “only” a very unfortunate material loss. We don’t think you should throw them away. We hope this answers your question.

2012 is the year of the dragon on the Chinese calendar. The sea horse is in Japanese TATSUNO OTOSHIGO. Literally “illegitimate child of a dragon”. As I am not familiar with the dragon, I chose a sea horse for creating my New Years card for 2012.

I am so excited to find this site. Two years ago I created the slogan "See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil, Write No Evil . . . But If You Must, Call Us First" for my law firm. We even developed a logo (which I will see if we can get uploaded - hopefully you will get a chuckle), and we have had it printed on mugs, paper clips and leather coasters. Clients love it, and I have gotten a lot of laughs and referrals from it. My law clerk moved to Japan, and sent me some pics of the original Toshogu Shrine monkeys. I was searching for background, and found you guys. And you are meeting in my home city in July. I am so excited. I think I will have to attend the dinner. Maybe I will bring some of my extra leather coasters, mugs and paperclips, if anyone wants them.

The coming year is the "Dragon Year". There appear two castles.

The first one is Himeji Castle, National Treasure and inscribed to UNESCO's World Cultural Heritage. This is located in the city of Himeji, to the west of the city of Osaka.

The second is Azuchi Castle (now non-existent) built by Oda Nobunaga, an innovative warrior in the 16th century. He is one of the popular warriors in the history and often dramatized in movies and TV programs.

The third one is "Tokyo Sky Tree." Now this is under final stage of construction. It will be opened in next May. I hope the site works normally.
